Music Ethnography
For my ethnography I have decided to analyze the high school band culture. This is an extremely competitive culture where schools constantly practice to compete against other schools, as well as students against each other for the top chairs. I plan on attending a few rehearsals from The Colony High School as they prepare for their UIL contests during the spring. Through the years I have talked to many band students from schools outside of Texas, and they all agree that Texas has the most intense musical programs. The junior high and high school I graduated from were very competitive and won several national and international contests. At one point they beat out schools from Japan and France to win the Suddler Cup, a very prestigious award. It will be interesting to see how the music program has evolved over the past few years.
