This is a classical Indian musician named Pt Bhimsen Joshi. This performance can be described as a heterophony. Even though there is one singer with a melody, the aerophones in the background also contain different variation and ornamentations with the melody. One of the aerophones seems to be used as a drone throughout the whole piece. While all this happens a membranophone adds an accent to the song. Pt Bhimsen Joshi, himself, sings with very elaborate melodies. He also sings with melismas.
I actually had a hard time figuring out the function of music this artist would be classified in, because I don’t know enough about this artist. On one hand he seems to dedicate his songs for the sake of the art, but he is also very popular and can be found all over the internet. Because his popularity has spread his name throughout the world, I’d say he is in the popular music category.
